Liposuction : Scientific way to get rid of unwanted body Fat

For some of us certain parts of our bodies are resistant to exercise, fat stays no matter how many miles we run, sit-ups we perform, weights we lift the eg are disproportionate hips, buttocks, thighs, the belly, and “love handles.

Liposuction, also known as lipo, lipoplasty, or body contouring ,
is a form of cosmetic surgery that removes fat from specific parts of the body which do not react to diet and exercise. It only improves the contour of the body. Its not a substitute for a balanced diet and regular exercise nor is it an overall weight-loss method.

Liposuction is used to remove fat from areas of the body that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, such as the:

  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks
  • Double Chin
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest and back
  • Hips and thighs
  • Chin and neck

Uses :

Liposuction can safely and permanently treat those fatty areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Eg Abdomen, Back, Thighs and Hips

Liposuction is mainly used to improve appearance and contouring the body.

When an individual gains weight, each fat cell increases in size and volume. Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in isolated areas.

Benefits:

Liposuction is done for cosmetic purposes, but sometimes it is used to treat certain conditions.
These include Lymphedema , Gynecomastia, Lipodystrophy syndrome, Lipomas.

It is a day care procedure and hence patients go home the same day.

The results are seen immediately and improve over 2-4 weeks time.

Target Volume:

Upto 5 litres of fat can be aspirated safely. Mega-volume liposuction as an 8000 ml aspirate. Giganto-volume liposuction as an aspirate of 12,000 ml.

An Ideal candidate:
You need to have realistic expectations.
• Not smoke.
• Have firm elastic skin.
• Be within 30% of your ideal weight.
• Have good muscle tone.
• Not have a lot of excess skin.
• Not be overweight or obese.

The surgery :
Surgery begins with a tiny incision inconspicuously located in a natural skin fold or crease in an area to be treated. Next, anaesthetic solution is injected through a micro cannula. The Surgeon moves the micro cannula back and forth under the skin. With the help of a high pressure suction machine, the unwanted fatty deposits are removed permanently and the desired shape is created.

During the operation:
This is a Day care surgery or one day stay in hospital can be required .The anaesthesia chosen can be General/ Regional or local anaesthesia with sedation depending on the site and patient characteristics. It should always be performed by Board certified Plastic Surgeon.

Postoperative recovery:
As patients are typically treated as outpatient & they are discharged on the same day.  A tight-fitting garment is worn over the area. Plenty of oral fluid and high protein diet is advised to facilitate healing. Normal activities resumes in 3-5 days and return to work after one week.

Expected Results:
The final contour take about few weeks to months to manifest ,as swelling reduces and the skin re-drapes well. Exercises helps to get better and faster results. Results are permanent with constant weight .

liposuction

liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, or neck. Liposuction also shapes (contours) these areas. Other names for liposuction include lipoplasty and body contouring.

Liposuction isn’t typically considered an overall weight-loss method or a weight-loss alternative. If you’re overweight, you’re likely to lose more weight through diet and exercise or through bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass surgery than you would with liposuction.

Why it's done

Liposuction is used to remove fat from areas of the body that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, such as the:

  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest and back
  • Hips and thighs
  • Chin and neck

In addition, liposuction can sometimes be used for breast reduction or the treatment of gynecomastia. When you gain weight, fat cells increase in size and volume. In turn, liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in a specific area. The amount of fat removed depends on the appearance of the area and the volume of fat. The resulting contour changes are generally permanent — as long as your weight remains stable.

After liposuction, the skin molds itself to the new contours of the treated areas. If you have good skin tone and elasticity, the skin is likely to appear smooth. If your skin is thin with poor elasticity, however, the skin in the treated areas may appear loose.

Liposuction doesn’t improve cellulite dimpling or other skin surface irregularities. Likewise, liposuction doesn’t remove stretch marks. To be a candidate for liposuction, you must be in good health without conditions that could complicate surgery such as restricted blood flow, coronary artery disease, diabetes or a weak immune system.
